Ancoura is a not-for-profit
organization dedicated to providing housing and a supportive community for
Ottawa-area adults living with mental illness. It is based on the L’Abri en
Ville model and is strongly supported by local faith-based communities.
Ancoura is characterized by heart – united by a spirit of mutual
respect, cooperation and care – and courage
– a belief in the potential for individuals to be empowered to grow – all anchored in stable, long-term housing
embraced by a vibrant community of supports.
The organization plans to open one or more apartments by 2009. In these homes, groups of three residents living with mental illness will benefit from a strong, supportive community of volunteers and professionals.
Ancoura intends to form
partnerships with local community housing agencies and landlords in the Ottawa
area, as well as with faith communities and mental health organizations. Ancoura’s aim, to
offer stable, affordable housing in a supportive community, is designed to
nourish the self-worth, independence and quality of life for all
residents.
